The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office recently had to write a sad Facebook post, saying goodbye to one of the canine members of their department.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to announce that we lost one of our family earlier today with the passing of K9 Haakon this morning.”
The intelligent and dedicated German Shepherd had been working alongside his partner, Deputy Stillman, for almost seven years before collapsing during training. Despite immediate medical care, he did not make it.
In the years he had been a member of the police force, he was not only a K9 of the sheriff’s department but a part of the family as well.
Remembering a very good K9
The Facebook post continues:
“Deputy Stillman and K9 Haakon have been a rock-solid team that have made countless, positive, and lasting impacts on the community they bravely and proudly served.”
Over the years, the dog had stood by his partner in countless dangerous situations, never running from the challenge and always doing his best to protect the public.
But it wasn’t all dangerous police work that took up his days. He also had the opportunity to visit schools in the area and give the children a chance to get to know him in person. He was a spokes-dog for the sheriff’s office, and a very good one at that.
While police dogs may be trained specifically for one task, that doesn’t mean that is the only thing they will be doing during their working days.
This was definitely true in the case of K9 Haakon, who had a chance to experience so many different aspects of life. He dove into each one of them and shared his talents as well as his amazing personality.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department has been grateful for the support they have received during this time.
They added their thanks on Facebook to let the community know:
“We would like to thank the public for their unwavering love and support and all of the heartfelt wishes. We would also like to thank our allied agencies and fellow K9 Units for their show of support in a private procession and remembrance of a True Hero.”
People responded with compassion as well as gratitude for the service the dog has performed for the community over the years. They remembered the impact Haakon made at work as well as the lives he had touched.
“Our family feels so privileged to have met K9 Haakon and Deputy Stillman at the K9 trials a couple of months ago; he was so wonderful with our children. Thank you for your service K9 Haakon! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all 💙”
“I am so sad to hear of K-9 Haakon’s passing 💔 Thank you for your service! Condolences to his partner, Deputy Stillman and all of the SJ CO Sheriff’s office. 💙🇺🇸”
There have been hundreds of responses and an outpouring of support and condolences.
K9 Haakon will never be forgotten. The dedicated police dog has a place to remain alive in many hearts.
